These sessions cover a variety of basic book-binding techniques which are the springboard for further artistic creation. These books can become sketchbooks, journals, albums, collections, containers for all sorts of explorations. We will make use of simple materials (to keep costs down and to emphasize an art form that can be made in any studio, kitchen, living room, etc) to create unique and crafted book objects. Participants will be encouraged to integrate the new techniques with their own needs: journalists, photographers, graphic/interior designers, cooks, biologists, art historians, law students, you name it! Participants encouraged to bring in materials to possibly incorporate into book. No previous artistic coursework necessary.
Options: 1. 4-hour Workshop: 2 book styles will be demonstrated and participants will conclude with 2 finished books. Ideal for those passing through Florence on shorter schedule, but wish to learn a few basics in the craft of book-making. Participants encouraged to bring materials from their trip/journey that they wish to either include in the book or manipulate and turn into the book material itself. Cost is 60 euro per person includes all basic materials (including scissors, glue, ruler, plus papers, board, ribbons, thread, etc). Min 2, max 4 people. May be scheduled Sunday and Monday or evenings Tues-Saturday. Sign up and full payment required 1 week before requested date. 2. Long-term Session: A 2.5 hour class held once a week over the course of 12 weeks (30 hour total). Extra to this schedule are trips to galleries, local artisan shops, etc upon request. This longer session allows for participants to learn 1-2 book making and binding techniques one session and requires them to personalize the technique by applying to personal and artistic questions and ideas the following session. Cost is 540 euro (45x12 weeks) and includes all materials used for demonstrations as described above, (participants will supply their own supplies for individual books made after prototype finished in class as well as drawing materials as needed). Min 2, max 4 people. Session begins Sept 21, or as decided by group. Weekly classes can be scheduled for Sundays or Mondays as decided by group. Sign up and course deposit required 1 week before start date. Full payment of balance for course fee is due the first day of class.
